Sheriff: A Baltimore man uses children as a shield in a shootout with Georgia lawmakers

A Baltimore man was shot dead during an altercation with Georgia lawmakers after using his children as a shield late Wednesday night, authorities said at a Georgia apartment. At around 8:30pm, MPs received a call about a domestic violence incident in which the victim, Rebecca Crews, reported that she fled her home after being attacked and held against her will. According to the report, crews hid in the woods for several hours before being picked up by a family member and taken to the sheriff’s office. She told deputies that she shares two children with McCardell and that he has outstanding warrants over a domestic violence incident in Baltimore. Around 10:30 p.m. MPs arrived at the home to check on the children’s well-being when they were reportedly met at the door by McCardell. While holding both children, he fired a shot at the deputies. He then retreated into the apartment, only to return to the door and fire another shot. This resulted in the deputies returning fire, forcing McCardell to barricade himself inside the apartment. According to the sheriff’s office, a negotiator was called and contacted McCardell. After several hours, they were able to get him to come to the door. A distraction device was then deployed, police said, resulting in McCardell aiming his gun while he was still holding the children. The deputies then fired, hit him in the leg and he was taken into custody around 3:30 am. According to the report, the children were rescued by the deputies and were not injured in the incident. McCardell was treated for a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital. He faces multiple charges including false imprisonment, possession of a firearm while committing a crime and multiple counts of aggravated assault.
