Georgia will begin their away game in the Sunshine Slam tournament tonight when they take on the St Josephs Hawks. This will be the first-ever matchup between the two teams. ESPN currently gives Georgia a 75.1% chance of winning. However, they are only a 2.5 point favorite.
Georgia put on a strong 2nd half performance against Bucknell in a game they won 65-61. Senior guard Terry Roberts was a major contributor to Georgia’s success as he led the team in both points and rebounds with 20 and 9, respectively. Georgia will be looking for a third straight win under first-year head coach Mike White. A streak they failed to match last season under former head coach Tom Crean.
St. Joseph’s go into this game with an impressive 2-1 shooting record. In their previous win over the Albany Great Danes, the Hawks shot over 56% from the floor, including 46% from the 3-point line.
The Hawks are led by guards Erik Reynolds II and Cameron Brown. Together they average 38 points per game, while Brown currently leads the team in rebounds and blocks as well. The duo’s performance tonight will most likely determine the outcome of the game as no other member of the team is averaging more than 10 points per game.
Georgia will once again rely heavily on senior guard Terry Roberts for its offensive success. Roberts currently leads the Bulldogs in points, assists and steals and, despite an illness, is coming off his best game of the season against Bucknell. Freshman forward KyeRon Lindsay will also be a key factor off the glass. The Bulldogs’ lead rebounder averages 6.5 rebounds per game and must prevent the Hawks from scoring second chance shots.
Georgia showed a big improvement in ball care in the 2nd half against Bucknell and needs to do the same to secure a win. St. Joseph’s are currently averaging 7.7 steals per game. However, the Hawks are also turnover-prone themselves, averaging 15.7 per game. Expect Mike White’s signature 1-3-1 defensive scheme and his all-court pressing to appear multiple times throughout most of this game.
