Georgia outside linebacker Robert Beal accepts invitation to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl

Last offseason, Georgia was an outside linebacker Robert Bel decided to return to Athens for a fifth year as a bulldog. Now that his professional aspirations are drawing closer, Beal has secured a spot in one of college football’s all-star games.

The East-West Shrine Bowl announced Monday that Beal has accepted an invitation to play the 2023 version of the game. Beal plans to attend the game, which will take place on February 2, 2023 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Beal had played in all 10 games for Georgia this season, starting against Auburn, Tennessee and Mississippi State. He recorded 13 tackles, 11 quarterback pressures, 2 quarterback hurries, and 0.5 sacks during that period; He had a season-high 3 tackles against Missouri on October 1.

Beal was expected to play a bigger role on defense after his outside linebacker Nolan Smith tore his chest against Florida on October 29.

Beal appeared to suffer a neck injury against Tennessee on Nov. 5, but head coach Kirby Smart noted two days later that the injury was not considered serious.

Robert had a sting and feels good. We’ll see,” Smart said. “I feel good that he can play.”

A former four-star contender, Beal was one of several Georgian players to be part of both teams under Smart to reach the national championship game. Beal signed with Georgia in the 2017 class and wore a red shirt during the first heat of the College Football Playoffs. He played a much bigger role in the 2021 national championship run, leading the team with 6.5 sacks.

Beal appeared in all 15 games of the 2021 season, amassing 23 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss to go along with that team-leading sack total. He also had a couple of passing separations that year. It was a late-season surge that allowed Beal to take the team lead in sacks — he had five in the last six games of the season, including a sack in each of the Bulldogs’ playoff wins.

Overall, in more than four seasons as a Bulldog, Beal has recorded 59 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 8 sacks and 1 forced fumble.
