To keep its undefeated record and No. 1 ranking intact, Georgia takes to the streets when it takes on SEC Eastern foe Kentucky in Saturday’s CBS Game of the Week in the SEC. The Bulldogs are coming off a 45-19 win over Mississippi State, which pulled away in the second half, while Kentucky suffered a loss to Vanderbilt last week — a loss that broke the Commodores’ 26-game SEC loss streak.

The big storyline is how Georgia will react to their second straight game against a league opponent desperate for a win. The Wildcats have been ranked No. 7 in the country but have lost four of their last six games and struggled on both sides of the ball. A win against Georgia would give the fan base and administration some good news to draw on after flirting with ultimate success in the first month of the season.

What awaits you on Saturday afternoon? Let’s break down the game and hit picks straight and against the spread.

Georgia vs. Kentucky: Must know

Eyes on Rodriguez: Kentucky running back star Chris Rodriguez Jr. has surpassed 100 yards on ground in four of his last five games while providing some balance for a Kentucky offense that was badly lacking that balance earlier in the season. He will test the strength and depth of a Georgia defense that has established itself as one of the best in the nation.

“He seeks and appreciates contact,” said Georgia coach Kirby Smart. “And it’s that time of year when you’re watching defenses across the country and people are refusing to touch. They reject hits. We make a point of showing our guys that tackling gets worse and worse as the year goes on. Will we be bitten by this contagious virus of unwillingness to hit and attack people, especially a guy who loves it. I mean he’s looking for it. he wants to hit you One of the most physical runners I have. seen, and it seems like Kentucky always has ‘that’ guy.”

It will be a tall order for Kentucky to upset Georgia. If Rodriguez can succeed against the group, the Wildcats at least have a chance.

Where is AD Mitchell?: The Georgia wide receiver, who had the crucial touchdown catch in the win in the national title game against Alabama, has been largely absent from action this year. He had five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in the first two games of the season but has been out since with an ankle injury. It doesn’t sound like Mitchell will be available against the Wildcats.

“He wants to go back. He’s working really hard on it,” Smart said Monday. “Last week he was better than every week before. He actually had to do individual exercises and do some things last week. But he still isn’t, or at least last week, I don’t know where he is this week because I haven’t seen him yet, but he hasn’t been where he could come out of the breaks and do the things required to play Receiver, and that’s tough. So he stayed here. He got some extra rehab here, felt like he got a little bit better rehab here, I don’t need to be there all weekend and during the game. So again we hope to get him back this week but it will be day by day.

Georgia’s top wide receiver is Ladd McConkey, who has 578 receiving yards this season. Kearis Jackson has 246 yards — the second highest among true wide receivers. That seems crazy these days. Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken needs to find someone out there to help the entire offense, and Mitchell should do just that. Let’s see if he goes this weekend. Either way, he needs to return for the SEC championship game and possibly the college football playoffs.

Stetson for Heisman?: Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV had a great season that should generate at least some excitement for the Heisman Trophy. He’s second in the SEC in passing yards per game (289.5), though several Georgia games have been blowouts in which Bennett wasn’t even on the field. He has 144 rushing yards (including negative yards from sacks) and seven rushing touchdowns on the road. More importantly, he has been a rock for the reigning national champions in their quest for continued success in the modern era.

Will Smart Bennett last longer than expected and improve his stats? A Heisman trophy is a great recruiting tool, and Smart knows how much it would mean to the program if he could turn a former career changer into the winner of college football’s biggest single award.

Georgia vs. Kentucky prediction, tips

I take the Bulldogs to not only win but to cover the massive spread. The Wildcats have fallen off a cliff, quarterback Will Levis has thrown more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four) in their last four games, and last week’s loss to Vanderbilt must drain for a team that once had high hopes . The Bulldogs will be stepping on the gas more than usual to keep their first teamers fresh for the stretch run. Forecast: Georgia (-22.5)
