PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, November 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ —
Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club features GRAMMY® award-winning producer, guitarist and vocalist JOHN PIZZARELLI Thursday 15.12 at 8 p.m World famous jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli was celebrated by the BOSTON GLOBE for “reviving the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz”.
“It’s his guitar playing that really puts him in a class of his own”
While many jazz greats influenced his work – Benny Goodman, LesPaul, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry and Slam Stewart, among others—Nat King Cole has been Pizzarelli’s hero and foundation for the past 25+ years. He dedicated two albums Nat King Cole Music, “Dear Mr. Cole” in 1994 and “PS Mr. Cole”, recorded and released five years later.
As one of the major contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Pizzarelli has added the music of to that repertoire Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, TomWaits, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles.
“A rare old-school entertainer”
– THE SEATTLE TIMES
“The Brilliant Genius of the Guitar”
– THE TORONTO STAR
“The music is great as always; the vocals are exceptional as always”
– THE HUFFINGTON POST
“It’s his guitar playing that really puts him in a class of his own”
– THE NEW YORK
Pizzarelli’s solo career began in 1990, when she performed in jazz circus clubs and concert halls, opening up to the likes of Dave Brueckeck, Ramsey Lewis and Rosemary Clooney. In 1993 he was honored to open for Frank Sinatrahis international tour and then attended his 80th birthday celebrations at Carnegie Hall and brought down the house singing “I Don’t Know Why I Love You Like I Do” accompanied by his father.
In 2006 he introduced Dear Mr. Sinatra, John’s tribute album set to Ol’ Blue Eyes with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The collection features John Claytons clever reworking of standards like “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “You Make Me Feel So Young” as well as songs written for Sinatra, “Ring-A-Ding-Ding!”, “Nice and Easy” and “The Last Dance”. That NEW YORK TIMES praised the recording for “exploding with enthusiasm and excitement.”
Pizzarelli’s 2008 recording, the GRAMMY® Award-nominated album With a Song in My Heart, celebrates the composer’s music Richard Rodgers and includes swinging Rodgers & Hart standards like “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Mountain Greenery” and “Johnny One Note,” as well as South Pacific theater tunes and The King and I. The singer-guitarist’s first-ever album Duke Ellington recording, ‘Rockin’ in Rhythm’, was released in February 2010. For the dozen tracks, Pizzarelli took Ellington’s course and clearly showcased the strengths of the musicians in the band. Pizzarelli received the 2009 Ella Fitzgerald Award from the Montreal International Jazz Festival, joining a select group of previous winners including Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Etta James, Diana Kraland Harry Connick Jr.
Pizzarelli has combined songs by great pop songwriters of his own generation with traditional jazz arrangements and melodies. “Double Exposure”, released in 2012, united the Beatles and Lee Morgan, TomWaits With Billy Streuhorn and the Allman Brothers Band with the style of Wes Montgomery. The GUARDIAN, UK was among the many releases to praise the album: “The arrangements are witty and witty, the vocals deceptively easy and the guitar playing just terrific. It is a pleasure.”
Pizzarelli’s Midnight McCartney album originated in Paul McCartney’s 2012 GRAMMY®-winning album, “Kisses on the Bottom”. Pizzarelli played guitar on 10 of the album’s 14 tracks and supported Sir Paul at an iTunes concert at Capitol Records Studios, at the GRAMMY® Awards and the Recording Academy’s annual MusiCares Person of the Year Gala. Fifteen months after these performances, Paul McCartney wrote to Pizzarelli to consider including some of his lesser-known jazz-style songs. Pizzarelli’s “Midnight McCartney” album hit a new chart high for John, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
John was co-producer of the JamesTaylor Album ‘American Standard’, which received a GRAMMY® Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album November 24, 2020.
