Manchester Police warn of an ‘alarming’ number of gun thefts

Concern is growing in Manchester after police said an “alarming” number of guns were being stolen across the city and used in the commission of a crime,” said Heather Hamel, spokeswoman for Manchester Police. Police said 73 guns were stolen in Manchester alone in 2022, 43 of them from unlocked cars. “It’s avoidable if you lock your door,” Hamel said. Police chief says Bob Boilard is program director at Defensive Strategies in Manchester. “It’s happening right now. That’s worrying,” Boilard said. “And we hope gun owners can be responsible and make sure they keep their gun in their car to make sure it’s locked.” In his gun safety courses, he teaches gun owners how to properly store their guns. “Cars are simple, you know, most vehicles have four entrances, four doors,” Boilard said. “And it’s very fast. “Boilard keeps a locker in his car to make sure his gun is safe when he can’t carry it.” This is a $25 investment on Amazon,” Boilard said. “It’s all it takes.” He said steps like these can keep a gun from getting into the hands of the wrong person. Police said even if you don’t have a gun, it’s also a reminder to always lock your car doors.

“A lot of these cases where these guns are often stolen, they fall into the hands of the wrong people and are then used in the commission of a crime,” said Heather Hamel, spokeswoman for Manchester Police.
