A poll released just before Thanksgiving shows voters favor Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over former President Donald Trump as the pair head towards a possible presidential showdown in 2024.
Trump was the first frontrunner to announce his 2024 candidacy on Nov. 15, but DeSantis has had a major surge in popularity since his landslide re-election win on Nov. 8.

A YouGov national poll released Wednesday showed that DeSantis has much higher approval ratings than Trump among all voters and independents. DeSantis has an overall positive net rating among respondents, while Trump’s approval rating is underwater.
The YouGov survey polled 1,500 people via online advertising between November 19 and 22. The results have an error margin of 3 points.
Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday showed that 6 in 10 people view Trump’s recent campaign as a “bad thing.” Additionally, 43% of respondents said they would prefer DeSantis to win the Republican nomination over Trump, while Republicans are evenly split on support for both candidates in 2024 at 44%.
DeSantis has also overtaken Trump in a number of key early voting states, according to data collected by WPA Intelligence and Club for Growth.
In Iowa, DeSantis leads Trump by 11 points, a whopping 180 from results released in August. DeSantis also leads Trump in a primary matchup, 52-37 in New Hampshire, 55-35 in Georgia and 56-30 in Florida.
With Trump being the only GOP nominee to run for 2024 so far, he remains the clear favorite to secure the Republican presidential nomination. Trump has consistently done well when polling only GOP voters in a possible direct matchup, but DeSantis has made progress.
A Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll poll Monday showed Trump retaining a double-digit lead over DeSantis in a hypothetical primary, but DeSantis had cut Trump’s lead by 11 points since the summer.
“Month-over-month, DeSantis has gone up and now he’s clearly outperforming Trump,” said Mark Penn, the poll’s co-director, of the poll results. “If they both run, it’s going to be quite a race and Trump could well lose.”
Trump has an even bigger lead over DeSantis in the latest Emerson College poll, which showed the former president defeated his closest rival by 30 points and lost both Republicans in the general election to presumptive Democratic nominee President Joe Biden.
